Trinity Episcopal Church Position Description
Job Title: Christian Education Director Department: Administration Reports to: Rector
Trinity Episcopal Church’s Christian Education Director is directly responsible for: (1) the Sunday School program provided for children Preschool through grade 12, (2) children’s programs during Wednesday Night Church Nights, and (3) Trinity’s annual week of Summer Vacation Bible School.
The goal is to: Create vital Christian Education programs for Trinity’s children and youth with the input of the rector, teachers, parents, and children. Maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect and Christian caring.
This is an annual (September 1 – August 31) part-time, salaried, 18 hour / week position. Required time commitments include Sunday mornings for Sunday School, Tuesday mornings for Staff Meetings, and Wednesday Evenings for Church Night.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Sunday School Program for children Preschool – 12th grade. 1. Administer and oversee Christian Education program each Sunday morning. 2. Administer and oversee children’s program during Wednesday church nights. 3. Administer and oversee Vacation Bible School. 4. Recruit, train, and support volunteer teachers and substitutes for programs. 5. Acquire and maintain appropriate curriculum materials and supplies. 6. Provide appropriate Christian education program during Summer schedule. 7. Coordinate regular & additional activities with Rector & Office Administrator. 8. Greet & welcome new and returning families to Trinity. 9. Coordinate all activities related to Christian Education i.e: Welcome Sunday, Christmas Pageant, Holy Week, Recognition Sunday. 10. Once a year present the Sermon at all adult worship services. 11. Maintain open, positive communication with families, Rector & church staff. 12. Maintain bulletin boards and/or special displays.
Wednesday Church Night Program: 1. Plan and present relevant, appropriate Christian Education programs for children Kindergarten – Grade 12. 2. Recruit, train, and support volunteer staff as needed. 3. Work as an active member of the Faith Formation Committee to co-ordinate the children’s programming with planned adult programs. 4. Maintain and acquire curriculum supplies and materials as needed.
Summer Vacation Bible School: 1. Maintain and acquire V.B.S. curriculum, materials, & supplies. 2. Recruit, train, & support volunteers. 3. Effectively advertise annual VBS program. 4. Oversee the week’s activities, volunteers, & materials.
Administrative Duties: 1. Maintain and document regular office hours. 2. Attend weekly Tuesday morning staff meetings. 3. Attend monthly evening Faith Formation meetings 4. Report to Vestry on a quarterly basis or as needed. 5. Develop and maintain a budget for the Christian Education program. 6. Coordinate fund raising programs as needed. 7. Each Sunday, secure offering during Children’s Chapel & present at Offertory. 8. Be available at Trinity Episcopal Church each Sunday (September – August) with the following provisions: (a) May choose not to be present up to six (6) Sundays per year. These Sundays are coordinated with the Rector & are inclusive of vacation time. (b) Christian Education Director must designate someone to oversee Programming each Sunday he/she is not present. 9. Send appropriate cards & messages to children and parents. 10. Help maintain Christian Education web pages on Trinity Episcopal Church’s webpage. 11. Maintain accurate attendance records of students. 12. Coordinate guidelines to offer Camp Huston & Six Day scholarships.
QUALIFICATIONS · A minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Education or related field. · Demonstrated ability working with children and youth. · Demonstrated ability in effectively written & oral communication. · Demonstrated ability to create effective children’s programs. · Demonstrated ability in Public Speaking. · Demonstrated ability to work as a team player. · Active, vital and growing personal faith. · Knowledge and understanding of the Episcopal Faith. · A personal feeling of being called to children’s ministry.
EVALUATION · An annual evaluation of the Christian Education Director and his/her programs is the responsibility of the Rector and will be conducted each July.
